Girls were front and center at Saturday's opening ceremony for Whales, Tales and Trails! MC Katie, a Cadette from Walpole did a great job of introducing all the guests. We also had girls as flag ceremony caller and describers of the historical uniforms - Cate and Tanya.
Seventeen Girl Scouts - Daisy to High School age - from Walpole and Reading troops, dressed in historic uniforms, executed a wonderful flag ceremony.
Of course we all recited our Pledge of Allegiance, Promise and Law, and sang America the Beautiful. GSEM CEO Pat Parcellin and Board Chair Elizabeth Stevenson welcomed the girls to Massachusetts, and so did Miss Louisa May Alcott. Franny Bester, a high schooler and Junior Intern at Old Sturbridge Village, told the girls a bit about the individual characters of the Alcott sisters and what they would see when they visited her home, Orchard House. Franny has a great future as an historian, IMNSHO!
A video presentation backed by some stirring music (Shipping Up to Boston...) detailing all the wonderful places and activities planned for the week (whale watch! sailing schooner trip! Duck Boats! Boston by Foot! Salem Witches! Strawbery Banke!) finished the ceremony on a high note!
Special thanks to our Cedar Hill GS Museum Docent, Nancy Marshall, who brought the historic uniforms and supervised the dressing and undressing process for the girls.
Day 2 was crammed with activity - I'll post more later!
